A recent INDSR public opinion survey was featured in The Diplomat, a leading international publication on Asia-Pacific affairs. The article, titled “How Russia-US Talks on Ukraine Shake Taiwanese Confidence in America’s Commitment”, was authored by Associate Research Fellow Kuan-chen Lee. Drawing on a nationally representative poll conducted in March 2025, the piece examines how Taiwanese perceptions of U.S. security commitments have shifted amid evolving global developments.
Specifically, the article highlights how President Trump’s negotiations with Russia—excluding Ukraine from peace talks—have fueled doubts in Taiwan about whether the United States would intervene in a Taiwan Strait conflict. The data reveal a clear pattern: the more respondents believed that U.S.-Russia talks undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty, the less confidence they had in Washington’s willingness to defend Taiwan. These findings underscore how U.S. foreign policy decisions abroad are deeply influencing Taiwanese public attitudes toward national security.
