Abstract
The ongoing geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region have been significantly influenced by recent developments, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war and closer military cooperation between Russia and China. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 heightened Japan's regional security concerns. In light of potential threats from neighboring nations, Japan has recognized the necessity to modernize its defense capabilities and assert strategic autonomy. The conflict underscored the volatility of military relations in the region and reinforced Japan’s resolve to enhance its self-defense forces.
The burgeoning military partnership between Russia and China poses a formidable challenge for Japan. As Russia exports advanced military technology and collaborates with China on the development of new weapon systems, Japan faces the prospect of confronting a more technologically sophisticated Chinese military. This partnership is not only enhancing China’s military capabilities but also increasing the strategic risks for Japan, particularly regarding territorial disputes and maritime security in the East China Sea and South China Sea.
In response to these evolving threats, Japan has undertaken significant policy adjustments, including increasing its defense budget and prioritizing acquisition of advanced weaponry. Strengthening alliances with the United States and other regional partners has become imperative for Japan to bolster its deterrence strategy and ensure national security. As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, Japan's ability to adapt to these challenges will be crucial in maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region and safeguarding its national interests.
