Abstract
This article explores public views on China’s gray-zone conflict tactics from the perspective of threat perception. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that Taiwanese are indifferent to the security threat, this study found that respondents in “the most dangerous place on Earth” are not only aware of the threat posed by China but evaluate the levels of threat differently according to various types of gray-zone operations. While people worry about the rising risks of conflict across the Strait, we have not observed a collective mood of fear among the public. Instead, China’s coercive measures against Taiwan have made citizens more vigilant and supportive of increasing government spending in response to the harassment. These results imply that, based on public support, the government of Taiwan can regularly address its vulnerabilities and reasonably allocate resources to prepare for threats.
