INDSR’s public opinion data was recently cited in an article published by the prestigious journal Foreign Affairs, titled “How to Toughen Up Taiwan: America Must Help the Island Deal With China’s Gray-Zone Tactics.” The piece was co-authored by Daniel Byman, a professor at Georgetown University, and Seth G. Jones, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

The article argues that in response to China’s intensifying gray-zone tactics, Taiwan must enhance its whole-of-society defense awareness and preparedness. The authors recommend that the United States assist Taiwan in strengthening its civil defense infrastructure, including expanding the number of air raid shelters, improving command and control systems, and developing and rehearsing emergency evacuation plans. These recommendations align closely with the findings of INDSR’s recent survey, which reveal strong public support in Taiwan for bolstering self-defense capabilities.
