Abstract
The five Central Asian countries, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan are surrounded by deserts and high mountains. The insufficient railway and highway transportation leading to a high cost for exporting goods has been their weakness in economic development. The infrastructure construction of these countries requires a large amount of capital investment. Therefore, the “China Railway Express”, which was deemed as one of the pillar projects under the “One Belt, One Road” proposed by Xi Jinping after he took office, has been viewed as a possible solution to improve the regional transportation system in Central Asia. However, the project seems to have limited its attention and resources on the construction of railway infrastructure and focuses only on logistic improvement. The “China Railway Express” does contribute to the China-Europe trade via railway transportation, but it benefits neither the five countries’ economic development, the trade between China and them, or their freight volume. Therefore, the benefit of the “China Railway Express” for the five countries is neglectable.
