Abstract
3D printing technology, unlike other traditional manufacturing technologies which have been around for hundreds of years, has a comparatively short development period of 40 years, and it is like sunrise, full of potential and vigor. Known as “additive manufacturing,” 3D printing is environmentally friendly, economical, convenient, and lightweight, and it has been widely used in various fields such as military, industry, medicine, and life in advanced countries. At the beginning of this century, Taiwan devoted considerable resources to 3D printing research in industry, government, and academia, to catch up with the manufacturing and certification capabilities in industrial manufacturing and medical fields. For example, our capability in making composite materials and artificial joints, as well as the quality certification of processes and finished products, is equal to that of advanced countries, but we still have a long way to go in terms of improving 3D printing in military applications. Since 3D printing technology can solve equipment shortage, waiting for materials and emergency maintenance problems to a high degree, it is a major advantage for the military. It is worth the military investing in its applications, including strengthening cooperation with industry and academia, constructing 3D printing databases, establishing certification energy, and procuring 3D printers. However, due to the convenience of 3D printing, related infringement lawsuits are not uncommon. Therefore, when the military adopts 3D printing, they should establish the technical capabilities while taking care with regard the legal aspects, so as to achieve substantial benefits in the field of 3D printing.
