Abstract
2022 marks a fruitful year for China’s diplomacy in the South Pacific. The “Security Agreement” between China and the Solomon Islands was a ground-breaking achievement. Through the agreement, China’s police, military police, and People’s Liberation Army could be deployed to the Solomon Islands; Chinese vessels also obtained the rights to make port calls and carry out resupply. However, the “Comprehensive Agreement” that China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi proposed to sign with 10 South Pacific countries that have formal ties with China was turned down. Nevertheless, a number of bilateral agreements were signed during Wang’s visit to the South Pacific May/June 2022. In addition to the aforementioned surprises, China continues to donate medical supplies to South Pacific countries to combat COVID-19. The eruption of an underwater volcano near Tonga gave China another excuse to exercise its diplomacy in the region. In view of China’s expansion of influence in the South Pacific, major regional countries cannot just sit back and watch. The South Pacific will remain a region filled with power competition in the near future.
