Abstract
On 15 September 2021, US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Australian Prime Minister Scott John Morrison jointly announced the formation of the “Australian-British-American Alliance” or the so-called “AUKUS.” On this basis, the three parties signed the “Exchange of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information Agreement” (ENNPIA) on 22 November 2021. This was the first agreement signed by the three parties since the establishment of AUKUS, and means that Australia, with the assistance of the UK and the US, has taken an important step towards building a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, AUKUS announced its decision on early April 5 of the same year to cooperate in the development of hypersonic, anti-hypersonic, and electronic warfare forces, as well as to expand intelligence sharing and deepen defense technology in response to a Ukraine-like crisis in the Indo-Pacific region. What impact will the Indo-Pacific strategy of the Russo-Ukrainian War have on the development of AUKUS? This topic is worth exploring in depth.
